Amsterdam’s Premier League team Ajax is a Dutch professional football club based in Amsterdam that competes in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football.
Ajax is also known as AFC Ajax, Ajax Amsterdam, or simply Ajax. Ajax has won 35 Eredivisie titles and 20 KNVB Cups in its history, making it the most successful club in the Netherlands.
Ever since the league’s inception in 1956, they’ve been one of Holland’s “big three” clubs, along with Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven, to dominate the Eredivisie.
Ajax has a rich soccer history and is regarded as one of the best teams in the world. The IFFHS ranks Ajax as Europe’s seventh most successful club of the twentieth century and the 1992 World’s Club Team of the Year.
Germany’s Kicker magazine ranked Ajax as the 20th century’s second most successful European club. They won the European Cup on consecutive years in 1971–1973, making them one of only five teams to earn the right to keep the trophy and wear a multiple-winner badge.
They won the Eredivisie, KNVB Cup, and European Cup in 1972, completing the continental treble. It also defeated Glasgow Rangers in the first-ever UEFA Super Cup, which was organized but not by UEFA (played in 1973). To date, Ajax’s most recent international success can be attributed to their triumphs in the Intercontinental Cup (1995), UEFA Super Cup (1995), and Champions League (1995), in which they defeated AC Milan on penalties. Ajax was named World Soccer magazine’s World Team of the Year in 1995.
This was accomplished by Ajax in the 1971–72 season, making them one of only four teams in history to win all three trophies in the same season/calendar year. As one of only five clubs in UEFA history to have won all three major club competitions, Ajax is proud of their accomplishment.
Additionally, they’ve won the Intercontinental Cup on two occasions, the UEFA Cup in 1991–92, and the Karl Rappan Cup in 1962, which was a precursor to the UEFA Intertoto Cup.
The Johan Cruyff Arena, formerly the Amsterdam ArenA and renamed in 2018, hosts Ajax matches. Both De Meer Stadion and Amsterdam Olympic Stadium have seen them perform in the past (for international matches).
