PDP National Convention 2021 Details
Following a failed attempt by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP suspended )’s National Chairman, Uche Secondus, to halt the party’s national convention, 3,600 delegates converge on Abuja on October 30 and 31 to elect new leaders for the country’s leading opposition and potential winner of the 2023 Nigeria general election.
The convention was initially in jeopardy until the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt Division, dismissed Mr Secondus’ appeal challenging his suspension and sought to halt the event on Friday.
At the PDP national convention 2021, at least 27 candidates are vying for 21 spots on the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
The full list of people who were cleared to run for the seats by the screening committee, which was chaired by former Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke.
At the PDP national convention 2021, the majority of the candidates were elected without opposition after successful discussions by the National Convention Organising Committee, chaired by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri and other party leaders, to find a consensus candidate for each position.
The North has chosen Iyorchia Ayu, a former senate president, as their consensus candidate for the job of national chairman.
As of Friday, Mr. Fintiri said, consensus candidates for only three positions: deputy national chairman (South), national auditor, and national youth leader.
A former governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and a former deputy governor of Osun State, Taofeek Arapaja, who is currently the PDP’s South-west deputy chairman, are fighting for the position of deputy national chairman (South).
Mr. Fintiri confirmed that some aspirants were disqualified by the screening committee, including Wale Oladipo (Osun), who expressed interest in the position of deputy national chairman, Eddy Olafeso, who applied for the position of national publicity secretary, and Akintan Oludaisi, who applied for the position of national deputy secretary, for filing suits against the party.
Okey Muo-Aroh (SAN), who expressed interest in the role of national secretary, was disqualified since he is from Anambra State, not Imo State, where the position was micro-zoned.
In his 19-minute statement at PDP national convention 2021, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, who also serves as Chairman of the PDP National Convention 2021 Organising Committee, commended his team’s diplomacy.
He claimed that things had never been this bad in the country before the advent of the current APC regime. He emphasized the need for the PDP to regain power in 2023.
Mr. Fintiri recounted the party’s history, attributing its rise to all previous chairman and stakeholders, with the exception of the contentious Uche Secondus.
In contrast to the statistic provided by the convention’s Organising Committee, the chairman of the convention stated that 3,600 delegates are expected to vote in the election of 21 NWC members.
The temporary National Chairman, Yemi Akinwonmo, gave a brief address after him, in which he also criticized the ruling APC. He then declared the election to be open.
The PDP will hold elections for its 21 NWC members over the next four years.
The phase is the center of the day’s activity, however, the election results may not be announced until 9 p.m., when they will take over the party’s management. Ahmadu Fintiri, the head of the Convention Committee, affirmed this earlier in his speech. The rationale for this, he explained, is to allow current NWC members to finish their four-year term, which began on December 9, 2017.
Delegates were told to take their seats in their designated location within Eagle Square, while supporters of the candidates were told to leave.
At approximately 4:45 p.m., the election authorities had likewise taken their separate seats in the center of the Eagle Square site of PDP national convention 2021.
Abaribe Speaking At The PDP National Convention 2021
“Today, millions are watching the proceedings of the convention because they are keenly awaiting the outcome,” Senate Minority Leader Enyinnanya Abaribe remarked on behalf of the PDP caucus in the National Assembly. They want to get away from the APC’s treasury theft, which is cold-blooded and arrogant. In the last six years, we have witnessed the ruling party’s suppression of our citizenry, extrajudicial killings, and injustice. As bandits take over our highways, our dumb administration does nothing.”
“They have pillaged our economy,” Mr. Abaribe, who represents Abia South, said of the economy. They’ve completely destabilized the economy. Millions are denied the chance to start profitable businesses, and when they speak out, they are brutalized.”
Atiku Speaking At The PDP National Convention 2021
Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, is speaking at the convention. “The country is going through the most difficult time in its history,” he added. “I am 70 years old, and I have never seen this kind of poverty, instability, and divisiveness in Nigeria before.” We have an opportunity to put the country right and unite it, a chance to return our country to its proper place among the countries. The PDP isn’t perfect, and neither are we. The APC has demonstrated that it is ill-equipped and crooked. The PDP’s unity is a reflection of Nigeria’s unity. We must build a country that is unconcerned by race and instead focuses on merits and the appropriate policy framework.”
