Troops Battle IPOB/ESN gunmen in Nnobi Anambra State

Nigeria troops fight IPOB ESN in Nnobi Anambra State

The Nigerian Army’s 82 Division has neutralized four gunmen from the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra/Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN) at Nnobi in Anambra as part of “Exercise Golden Dawn” in the South East.

Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, made the announcement in an Abuja statement on Saturday.
In a violent battle with troops on Friday at Nnobi Junction, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra, the gunmen were defeated, according to Nwachukwu.

He claimed the attackers had previously attacked security personnel stationed at Ekwulobia Roundabout in Anambra State’s Aguata Local Government Area.
He said, “Troops were quickly mobilized to the spot and proceeded on a pursuit of the culprits along the Nnewi – Nnobi route.”

According to him, forces caught up with the fleeing militants and engaged them in a firefight, killing four of them.

“The brave soldiers also found two AK-47 rifles, one GALIL Ace 5.56 x 45 Iwi gun, one Avofeng hand carried radio, and one Black Highlander jeep.”

“Unfortunately, one of the security services’ personnel paid the ultimate price,” he stated.
Nwachukwu further said that the army had foiled another attempt by IPOB/ESN militants at Umunze Checkpoint in the state’s Orumba South Local Government Area.

In the ensuing battle, he added, the watchful troops overcame the invaders, forcing them to flee, abandoning one Pump Action pistol with nine ammunition, a Ford truck, and four motorcycles.
According to him, the current attacks are part of a proscribed IPOB/ESN conspiracy to sow terror in the public and disrupt the upcoming governorship election in Anambra State.

“The Nigerian army, sister services, and other security agencies have reminded the people that they will not cease in forcefully fighting all criminals intent on harming the populace and national interest.

Law-abiding residents are encouraged to carry on with their regular routines without worry.

“Any suspicious activity detected in Anambra State should be reported to the nearest security post,” he added.
